The first post office in Gordon was established in 1860, it was know as Lane Cove post office. The office was in the back of a brick cottage, Iolanthe, located on the Pacific Highway. The cottage still exists, it can be just seen from the highway hidden behind tall bushes in the grounds of the Ravenswood School for Girls,. Miss Eliza Edwards was the first postmistress. They did not have a postman in those days, the mail was usually delivered by residents who visited the office, the baker or the butcher.
In 1879 Gordon was recognised as the Official place - name and the post office changed its name from Lane Cove to Gordon.
Gordon was name after Sir James Willoughby Gordon, who was the Quartermaster - General of the Horse Guards, London.
