MAXIMAPHILY – DEFINITION - PAGE 2, THE PICTURE POSTCARD

by Barbara Bartsch

(2) The Picture Postcard

  • Except for very early cards which were not issued in UPU standard sizes the card must not be smaller than 9 x 14 cm or larger than 105 x 15 cm.

*(This rule is also now being argued for allowing some of the modern larger standard sized postcards }

  • The picture must cover at least 75% of the card. (figure1)
  • It should be in fine condition.
  • No creases, missing corners etc. Although discretion is given to early cards that have been through the post.
  • And the card must not be a copy of the stamp such as the Uk PHQ Cards. (figure1)

Figure 1- This incorrect card is less than 75% and the picture is also identical to the stamp.

Also inadmissible are:

  • Card envelopes, cutouts, montages, private photographs or collages. (figure 2)
  • Not recommended are multi subject postcards unless all subjects are in design of the stamp. Or privately produced postcards.

Stamped postal stationery from countries producing picture postal cards can be used to produce a philatelic item where all three elements are wholly postal

Figure 2 - In this incorrect card, a photograph of the painting is used for the card
