Before Australia became a Federation in 1901, all of the six states issued there own stamps
The first state to issue postage stamps was New South Wales on the 1st January 1850

The stamp did not have any perforations, so when one was purchased they had to use scissors to cut a stamp from the sheet. Stamps that do not have perforations are called imperforate
